Foods and Cancer - to eat and not to eat

      For cancer the research suggests that the following foods are appropriate and perhaps helpful to eat. As always check with your doctor and have appropriate blood work done before following any of the research suggestions from this or other sources.

Some foods to consider eating more often

 * Pumpkin, canned or cooked
    (highest beta carotene of any food
     listed here)
 * Carrots, lightly cooked
    (better than raw because light
      cooking releases the caroteniods)
 * Sweet potatoes
 * Green leafy vegetables
 * Squash
 * Broccoli
 * Cabbage
 * Cauliflower (eat with foods that have a
    little canola or olive oil, it helps your
     body absorb the caroteniods)
 * Broccoli sprouts (20 more times by
    weight  of the chemical sulforaphane,
    which may reduce the growth of tumors.)
 * Mustard greens
 * Chick peas
 * Kidney beans
 * Lentils
 * Soybeans (stimulates cancer preventing
    enzymes, can help lower harmful
    estrogen levels)
 * Tomatoes, especially cooked
 * Garlic
 * Onions (stimulates enzymes that
     suppress tumor growth)
 * Defatted soy flour (at least 1/3 cup
    per day recommended)
 * At least 97% or greater fat-free chicken
    or turkey breast (look for 99% fat free.)
 * 97% or greater fat free lunch meats
 * Pasta with meat sauces using 99% fat
     free chicken
 * Homemade low fat pizza
 * Salmon and other fish, (mackerel,
     sardines, herring. ) including the skin
     and fat (Research suggests this fat
    (EPA fat) has the ability to raise HDLs.
    and potentially fight cancer cell
    development (1-5 servings per week
    recommended)
 * Olive oil or canola oil substituted for
    other oils
 * Walnuts (for the omega 3)
 * Brown and wild rice
 * Whole grain breads, ideally with defatted
     soy flour
 * Fat free milk (skim)
 * Oatmeal
 * shredded wheat, low-no sugar
    added cereals
 * Fresh fruits  especially Blueberries
   (40% more antioxidants than the
    next best, Strawberries)
 * Green tea
 * Red or black grapes
 * Grape juice, 1 cup per day
 * Grapefruit, especially pink which has
    40% more beta carotene than white
 * Calcium fortified orange juice,
    2 cups per day
 * Dried unsweetened fruits, especially
     apricots, dates, prunes
 * Homemade fat-free yogurt, with extra
    dry  milk added (2 cups per day
    recommended)
 * Tupelo honey as a substitute for sugar
    in cakes, cookies, breads, etc.

Foods to consider avoiding

 - 1%, 2% and whole milk
 - Meats with 96% fat or less
 - Red meats
Hydrogenated oils such as
 - stick margarine
Or foods that list hydrogenated oils in their ingredients

Food with high butter fat and other animal fats such as:

 * butter
 * sauces

 They feed the cancers and can interfere with caroteniods absorption
 ** Deep-fried foods

10 SIMPLE WAYS TO SUPERCHARGE YOUR BRAIN

1) EAT ALMONDS

Almond is believed to improve memory. If a combination of almond oil and milk is taken together before going tobed or after getting up at morning, it strengthens our memory power.... Almondmilk is prepared by crushing the almonds without the outer cover and adding water and sugar to it.

2) DRINK APPLE JUICE

Research from the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML) indicates that apple juice increases theproduction of the essential neurotransmitte r acetylcholine in the brain, resulting in an increased memory power.

3) SLEEP WELL

Research indicates that the long-term memory is consolidated during sleep by replaying the images of the experiences of the day. These repeated playbacks program the subconscious mind to store these images and other related information.

4) ENJOY SIMPLE PLEASURES

Stress drains our brainpower. A stress-ridden mind consumes much of our memory resources to leave us with a feeble mind. Make a habit to engage yourself in few simple pleasures everyday to dissolve stress from your mind. Some of these simple pleasures are good for your mind, body and soul.
*Enjoy music you love
*Play with your children
*Hug a stranger
*Appreciate others
*Run few miles a day, bike or swim
*Start a blog
*Take a yoga class or Total wellness routine

5) FAST FOR A DAY

Fasting cleans and detoxifies our body. It is known fact that heavy food not only causes stress on our digestive system but also drains our brainpower. Fasting relieves toxic emotions such as anger, grief, worry, and fears - before they accumulate and cause disease. By cleansing toxic emotions, fasting strengthens metal clarity with increases memory, concentration, creativity and insight.

6) EXERCISE YOUR MIND

Just as physical exercise is essential for a strong body, mental exercise is equally essential for a sharp and agile mind. Have you noticed that children have far superior brainpower than an adult does? Children have playful minds. A playful mind exhibits superior memory power. Engage in some of the activities that require your mind to remain active and playful.
*Play scrabble or crossword puzzle
*Volunteer
*Interact with others
*Start a new hobby such as blogging, reading, painting, bird watching
*Learn new skill or a language

7) PRACTICE YOGA OR MEDITATION

Yoga or Meditation relives stress. Stress is a known memory buster. With less stress, lower blood pressure, slower respiration, slower metabolism, and released muscle tension follows. All of these factors contribute significantly towards increases in our brainpower.

8) EAT A LIGHT MEAL IN THE NIGHT

A heavy meal at night causes tossing and turning and a prolonged emotional stress while at sleep. Eating a light meal with some fruits allows us to sleep well. Agood night sleep strengthens our brainpower.

9) DEVELOP IMAGINATION

Greeks mastered the principle of imagination and association to memorize everything. This technique requires one to develop a vivid and colorful imaginationthat can be linked to a known object. If you involve all your senses - touching, feeling, smelling, hearing and seeing in the imagination process, you can remember greater details of the event.

10) CONTROL YOUR TEMPER

Bleached food, excess of starch or excess of whitebread can lead to nerve grating effect. This results in a violent and some time depressive behavior. Eat fresh vegetables. Drink lots of water and meditate or practice yoga to relieve these toxic emotions of temper and violent mood swings.

Meditation:

Today's quotation:
You will succeed best when you
put the restless, anxious side of
affairs out of mind, and allow the
restful side to live in your thoughts.
Margaret Stowe
Today's Meditation:
I've learned that when I'm involved with sports in any sort of competition, I always perform best when I relax and don't worry about outcomes or final scores or how well I do.  When I coach, one of my most important goals is to get athletes to relax out on the field or on the court.  It's amazing how much more effective one can be when he or she is relaxed.
The restful side of ourselves is easily the most effective and most productive part of who we are.  When we come from a place of relaxation, the factors involved in our decisions don't seem as drastic to us, and we're able to make better decisions that are the result of more contemplation and insight.
Of course, there always will be those times when being relaxed and restful is inappropriate.  Sometimes tension is one of our best motivators, and it does have its place in our lives.  But its rightful place should be very small and come very rarely, only in extreme circumstances.  If we wish to succeed in ways that are good for us in the long term, in ways that will help us to live life fully, we must approach our decisions from the restful side of ourselves.  This is also the only truly fair and helpful way to help others.
Can you put the restless and anxious side of your affairs out of your mind?  If you can, then you're well on the way to improving the quality of your life in many important ways.
Questions to consider:Why do the restless and anxious sides of our
situations tend to dominate our thoughts?
How can we go about trying to let the restful side be
the side that we most focus on?
How can we go about relaxing in tense situations?
For further thought:
No one can escape stress, but you can learn to cope with it.
Practice positive thinking. . . seize control in small ways.

Why Online Dating is Like Applying for a Job

We got to think about the similarities between searching for someone to date and looking for a job. In both cases, your resume/profile and initial letter are the only thing standing between a dream life and rejection. Here’s how you can be better at both.

1. Your profile is your resume: Be specific

Who are you, really? You have to be careful here to not over or underdo it. Tell me too much about your quirks and I will think you’re weird. Too little and I won’t care enough to contact you. As you should on your resume, leave out looked over buzzwords and get down to the data. Sure you are a genuine guy who values honesty…I’ve heard that one before. What makes you special?

Advice: Make very apparent the three or four things that you are passionate about so you can attract someone who actually has the same interests. Don’t just say you like to workout. Say you run 25 miles a week or do P90X. Don’t say you like music. Say you like a specific band especially if this means a lot to you.Sorry to say, I don’t date country, but many, many women do!

2. But don’t be too specific

TMI, my friend, is just as taboo in the workplace as in the online dating community. If your profile runs on for five mouse scrolls, has typos or is rambling, you’ll lose me. Anything about your ex will turn me off, period. If you got fired from your last job, you wouldn’t put that on your resume.

Advice: If you are going to get specific, focus on something you know well. On your resume, this would be your most recent job. Maybe you increased sales by 45%. If you grill the best steak in the universe, throw it out there but be prepared to back it up. Steak enthusiasts will apply and smell a lie if you’ve never turned on a grill.

3. Your email is your cover letter

Boilerplate emails that go something like: I really liked your profile and would love to get to know you better or I am applying for the job you posted as are immediately deleted, unless you’re Brad Pitt. And even if you are, we’ll think you’re lying. The people I respond to comment on one or two things in my profile and connect it with something that they do.

Advice: Don’t contact people you don’t think you could be friends with. You wouldn’t apply to a job as an executive chef with no experience in a kitchen. A marathon runner will rarely date a couch potato.

4. Don’t wink

On Match.com at least there is an option to wink. This isn’t the ’50s. If you want to drop a quick line, do so, but follow the rules above. Even on Facebook, poking is so over and so impersonal.

Advice: You wouldn’t be too formal with a hiring manager. Manners go a long way. Be polite and respectful.

5. Don’t get discouraged

Yes you are going to get rejected most of the time when job searching or looking for someone you can stand to be around for more than 5 minutes.

Advice: The best piece of advice is to look for something you want, something you are qualified for and to focus your energy on that. Once that letter is out, let fate take over. Then move on. There are plenty of fish in the sea waiting to match their chemistry with you in perfect (e)harmony. :-)
